Here we are in the penultimate episode of NBC’s The Irrational. I’ve had a feeling that we might be near the end of the series at some point. It’s been a cool investigative series. The overarching plot of the church bombing investigation kind of halted some of the case-of-the-week episodes. However, all of the setup to lead where we are now might be worth it. So, let’s see what kind of conundrum Alec Mercer (Jessie L. Martin) got himself into this time.
Episode ten Bombshell finds Wes Banning (Ben Cotton) and another inmate being transported to another prison facility. Until someone knocked over the transport prompting Banning’s escape. Meanwhile, Mercer gets a call from his ex-wife/FBI agent Marissa Clark (Maahra Hill) that Banning escaped. Mercer fears that Banning might attempt to bomb the FBI with his ex-wife as a potential target. The FBI then begins the manhunt for Banning and securing the building. However, it is revealed that Banning holds Mercer and his teacher assistants Phoebe (Molly Kunz) and Rizwan (Alex DeMarsi) hostage as he plans to detonate the bombs at the school.
Mercer’s sister Kylie (Travina Springer) alerts Marissa that Mercer doesn’t usually turn off his phone indicating that something is wrong. She heads to the FBI staging area to help out and identify the hostages and Banning. Meanwhile, Matthias gets on the phone, threatening Banning to commit suicide or her daughter dies, which explains why Banning is panicking. Thanks to a picture of Banning’s kid Dahlia (Chloe McKinnon), Phoebe and Rizwan manage to deduce the location of where the now adult Dahlia(June Laporte) is living. With his stress levels dropped, and knowing Matthias might be watching, Banning detonates Mercer’s office as cover for both of them to find and warn Dahlia. Phoebe and Rizwan manage to get out safely to the authorities.
The duo finds Dahlia with her warmly welcoming to her estranged father. Banning pleads despite everything he has done by Matthias, his greatest success was her. As Mercer and Banning move Dahlia and her daughter Grace (Siana Bajwa) to a secure location, Matthias sends a sniper to kill Dahlia knowing that Banning failed. Banning takes the bullet protecting his daughter as he dies a redeemed person.
Marissa and Kylie were glad that Alex survived with the latter telling her not to do it again. Mercer goes to consul Dahila and her grief, hoping to talk some more with Mercer. As Clark returns home with takeout food, she notices that the house is too quiet. She ends up finding her partner Jace Richards (Brian King) on the floor unresponsive.
Well, that was a wild episode! It looks like the final episode will finally bring Matthias out into the light as season one is about to end. Looking back on this series, I did have some level of doubt if this will be any good. But now, it’s almost over and, I kind of don’t want it to end. There was an announcement for a second season, so it’s not all doom and gloom for fans of the show. We’ll have to see how the church bombing crisis concludes next Monday.
Episode ten Bombshell is a great penultimate episode that closes off one half of what is going to be an interesting season finale premiering next week.
